At Clay Cooley Hyundai of Terrell, we carry all four trims of this new Hyundai SUV. The Kona SE starts things off strong. It comes with LED Daytime Running Lights and automatic headlights and it has 16-inch alloy wheels. In its cabin, it features cloth upholstery, a manually adjustable driver's seat that can move in six ways, a 60/40 split rear bench and a dual-level cargo floor. That type of cargo floor lets you make adjustments depending on the type of items you're carrying. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the 8-inch color touchscreen, which is equipped with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Next up is the SEL. Instead of a standard remote keyless entry system, it has a more advanced and convenient proximity key entry system with remote start. Its technology package has several upgrades, including HD Radio, SiriusXM and Bluelink. When looking at the SEL from the exterior, you'll notice its rear privacy glass, shark-fin antenna and roof side rails. The heated side mirrors can come in handy, and it's nice that this trim has turn signals built into those mirrors.

The Kona N Line is a performance-oriented model that will satisfy the thrill seekers near Grand Prairie. Its style is enhanced by a twin-tip exhaust, special badging and exclusive N-Line front and rear fascias. It even has special sport cloth seats. It feels more luxury in other ways as well, as it has a premium audio system, heated front seats, aluminum-alloy sport pedals, and black and red interior accents.

Finally, the Limited has the most refined look. It's the only one to have LED headlights, a sunroof and leather seats. Plus, it has a larger touchscreen, navigation and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Passengers will be happy to have their own USB ports, too.

Engine and Performance

In the first two trims, you'll find a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. The top two trims also have a four-cylinder engine, but their version is turbocharged and has a displacement of 1.6 liters. The turbocharger makes a difference, as the N Line and Limited produce 195 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. They both use seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions that give them a sportier feel. In contrast, the SE and SEL use intelligent variable automatic transmissions, and they generate 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. This is still an excellent amount of power that you can take advantage of when driving around Irving. With all trims, front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional.

Safety

Many advanced driver-assist systems are available with the Hyundai Kona. For example, it can hit the brakes to avoid colliding with a car or pedestrian in front of you, correct your steering if you're veering out of a lane and stop you from backing up into traffic. The top-of-the-line trim, the Limited, comes with several of these types of technologies, including adaptive cruise control. With many of the other trims, some technologies are standard while others are optional. Blind spot monitoring becomes standard at the SEL level, as does rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist.
